Acts 5:8

Peter asked her, "Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?"  "Yes," she said, "that is the price."

The sin of Ananias and Sapphira was not that they withheld some of the profits from their land sale.  The sin was that they lied and told Peter they had donated the entire amount from the sale.  Verse 1 says that Sapphira made the sale with her husband, and verse 2 says that Ananias' choice to hold back some of the money was made with Sapphira's "full knowledge".  After Ananias is caught in the lie and is punished with death, Peter gives Sapphira the chance to come clean.  However, Sapphira joins Ananias in his sin, and ends up suffering the same consequence.

While we are told in the Bible to submit to our husbands, that never means we should join them in sin.  If our husbands choose to disobey God, we may have to stand alone for what is right, perhaps even at the risk of our marriage.  But obedience to God always comes before allegiance to our husbands.

Exodus 1:17

The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.

II Peter 2:17 says, "...Fear God, honor the king."  A true trophy wife shows proper respect to everyone, but she puts God first always, in everything.  God before husband, God before children, God before earthly authorities, God before self.

It's interesting to note that the midwives are named (Shiphrah and Puah, v. 15), and yet Pharaoh is not.  God honors our obedience.

Genesis 20:13

[Abraham said] "And when God had me wander from my father's household, I said to her, 'This is how you can show your love to me:  Everywhere we go, say of me, "He is my brother."'"

Oh, for Pete's sake, Abraham!  Did you really not learn your lesson back in chapter 12?  Why on earth do you keep doing this to your wife?  (Although I have to admit it really surprises me that he's still worried about men hitting on her now, when Sarah is 90 years old.  Apparently she was a pretty hot old lady!)

So anyways, here we have the same story, just another king.  And we learn that Abraham told Sarah that lying for him would prove her love.  Seriously?  That old line?  "If you really love me..."

I want to be a wife who demonstrates love to her husband.  I want my words and actions to reflect that I love and respect him.  But first and foremost, my life needs to reflect my obedience to God.  God first, my husband second.
